Altitude Record

A war-time pilot, Mr Keith Wakeman, of Christchurch, yesterday achieved an unofficial New Zealand altitude record for a light aircraft. Between 4 pxn. and 5 pan. he climbed up to 24£40ft above the city in a new Cesena training aircraft, powered by a 100 h.p. Continental motor. Normally this model Cessna has a service celling of 12,650 ft. It is the smallest model produced by the company. Mr Wakeman said the weather was good for the attempt, and that he averaged a rate of climb of 400 ft a minute “using a bit of Nft here and there.”

The previous altitude record was also set over Christ, church on July 22 thja year by Mr C. Glasgow, of Pukekohe, who reached 23,786 ft flying a Mooney Super 21 aircraft powered by a 200 h.p. engine.
