MAUGHAM DIES
VZ. Pr«»« A»«n — Copyright I NICE (France), Dec. 16. William Somerset Mangham, one of the century’s great storytellers, whose books sold millions of copies through three generations, died in his Riviera villa early today.
He eras five weeks short of his 92nd birthday. Announcement os Mr Maugham's death was made in Nice by Alan Searie. the author’s secretary and lifelong companion. Mr Mangham had been la e coma almost continuously since he was found unconsdous on Saturday morning in® a stroke at his villa near here. He was rushed to the hoe nitaL Mr Searie said at the villa overlooking the Mediterranean: “We brought him back when we knew he was going to die.” “He had always expressed a wish to die on his own bed, in his own house.”
He Mid Mr Maugham would probably be cremated tomorrow. He expressed a wish to be cremated and had said that he wanted his ashes taken back to England, Mr Searle said. (Obituary, Page 8)
