Labour Party Policy
Sir,—The Labour Party’s leader-elect, Mr Kirk, is reported as saying that “among farmers there was a growing interest in Labour’s policy." Curiosity, perhaps, but farmers who remember the rosy promises Labour made them in 1957 and the way they were slogged after the election will treat further overtures by Labour with caution Since 1960, whenever the present Government has made some tax concessions to farmers as an incentive for increased production, the Labour Party has referred to it as “tax relief for those who need it least.” Reductions in death duties were not even supported. Now that another election is looming, Labour has turned another flip and is trying to court the farmers again. Its line of approach will be interesting to observe, but farmers should be on their guard.—Yours, etc., ONCE BITTEN. December 15, 1965.
