Waste Paper
Sir, —Goodness knows how many tons of old newspapers and waste paper generally are committed to incinerators ahd rubbish dumps every day. Is it really impossible to turn all this stuff to some useful purpose? One read recently that somewhere in England contractors were offering £3 to £4 a ton tor it for pulp. It takes, of course, a major war or some other calamity to make us appreciate how much, including food, is wasted in normal times. Talking of papers, perhaps hospitals and similar institutions already get as many illustrated periodicals as they want: but if not, there must be thousands of copies piled up in people’s houses which are merely waiting to be thrown away.—Yours, etc., ILAM.
