stupid things. He is not interested in safety, the preaching of motoring writers or the lectures of magistrates, and for some the only cure is cancellation of his licence. Bitt I think such persons are a minority, and although many may be careless very few drivers wilfully set out to do something dangerous. The authorities must never fall into the trap of thinking most motorists are incompetent, semi-criminal idiots, as some over-ardent safety enthusiasts have claimed in the past Encouraged As one overseas visitor said recently, drivers should be encouraged to exercise judg-

ment, think for themselves, and be treated as responsible adults. If they prove themselves irresponsible, there is machinery for dealing with them. But the stupidity of 1 per cent should not result in unjustified action against the other 99 per cent, nor should the competent, responsible drivers be restricted to the level of the Incompetents. Rather, attempts should be made to raise the standard of the latter. Quote of the Week "Motor-minded young men and women want to drive and learn about cars, not listen to stuffy lectures about how dangerous their elders believe motoring to be. Safe driving should be achieved by subtle means and by setting good examples, rather than by policemen taking a class on what must seem like just another subject”—Editorial comment in “Motor Sport”
