English Rugby Trials

(N.Z.P.A .-Seuttr—Copyripht) LONDON. The English Rugby Union selectors have named the teams for the second union trial at Torquay on Saturday, December 18. They are: Probables: D. Rutherford (Gloucester), E. L. Rudd (Liverpool), C. W. McFadyean (Moseley), D. W. A. Rosser (Wasps), K. F. Savage (Northampton), T. J. Brophy (Liverpool), J. Spencer

(Harlequins), P. E. Judd (Coventry), J. V. Pullin (Bristol), D. L. Powell (Northampton), D. G. Perry (Bedford) (captain), J. E. Owen (Coventry), N. Silk (Harlequins), P. J. Bell (Btockheath), D. J. Matthews (Leicester). Possibles^-1. B. Moffett (Richmond), R. L. Jolliffe (Cambridge University), T. G. Arthur (Wasps), G. P. Frankcom (Bedford), P. M. Hale (Moseley), J. P. Horrocks - Taylor (Middlesbrough) (captain), R. D. A. Pickering (Bradford), A. L. Horton (Blackheath), D. E.

Lane (Moseley), IL J. DrakeLee (Manchester), A. M. Davis (Devonport Services), K. P. Andrews (Leicester), R. B. Taylor (Northampton), D. M- Rollltt (Bristol), ft P. Rogen (Bedford). M. Davis, rejected by the selectors last season, proved his international worth in the first trial at Gosforth on Saturday when Whites and Coloun drew, 6-6. After a quiet opening, he warmed to his task and dominated the lineouts. He was one of several stars in the Coloun side who were unlucky to be held to a drew by the senior team. Each side scored one penalty goal and one try. Davis, the red-haired Navy officer, is tremendously strong. He met thte threat of the England captain, D. Perry, and the Bristol giant, D. Watt, in the line-outs. .

N. Silk, relegated to the junior team in spite of playing in all four internationals last season, stood out. He made the life of the scrumhalf, R. Bateman, a misery and was outstanding in the loose. The three established players who came through with their reputations untarnished were D. Rutherford, P. Judd and A. Horton. Rutherford hardly put a foot wrong at full-back and Judd and Horton again proved themselves the toughest prop forwards in England.
