Fast Water Polo
In a fast and exciting senior water polo match, Beckenham, the competition leaders after the first round, beat Wharenui. 0-1. The other two senior matches were very close. Fendalton beating Christchurch, 5-4, and Beckenham B recovered to beat Elmwood. 4-3. University had the bye. Wharenui attacked from the
first swim-up with tha Canterbury Colts representative, s. Muatchin, winning the ball. However, several of the shots were saved magnificently by the Beck enhant goal-keeper B. Monk, and he managed to turn defence inio attack with the result that L Mclntosh acored. For Wharenui Muatchin swam all over the pool and all but scored. He was well supported by fellow Colts players I. Simson and G. Wild, but the experience of the Beckenham play ere put them further In front with another goal to Mclntosh. Beckenham's third goal came after I. Farquhar saved and Mclntosh caught the rebound and shot into the corner. M. Scott got a penalty to make the half-time ecore, 4-d.
Mclntosh netted his fourth oal soon after half-time but Wharenui retaliated with a fine [oal to Muatchin. On time M. Scott scored again. In the second match, Christchurch began strongly and P. Hatchwell scored from the swimup. B. Sutherland equalised for Fendalton but J. Turpin put Christchurch in front again with a long, hard shot. G. Furlonger. the young, promising Fendalton goal-keeper saved repeatedly but B. Turpin gave him no chance with a shot which made the score 3-1. Fendalton fought back and A ChappeM scored a fine (oal after swimming up the field in a solo effort. Soon after this P. Sturge put the ball Into the corner with a shot from the eide-Mne and Fendalton went nto the load for tha first time when R. Plrle scored. P. HatehweM netted Ms second goal but I. Johnson won the match for Fendalton with a powerful scoop shot. Beckenham B won by quick and accurate poewlng with G. Williamson outstanding in front of the Elmwood goal. He scored Beckenham's four goals. For Elmwood K. Chamberteln surprised with a powerful back handed and B. Moore scored twice. Other results ware:— Senior Reserve.—Spreydon «.
