Concerned About Leather Bones
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, Dec. 6. Health Department officials moved swiftly today to investigate the reported importation of Japanese rawhide chewing-bones for dogs into Australia. The bones were on sale in Melbourne pet shops, it was said.
The claim was made by the Federal secretary of the Federated Tanners* Association, Mr H. A. Hislop. All animal products are
subject to customs scrutiny and quarantine laws because of the danger of killer diseases entering the country. Australia and New Zealand are the only countries in the world which are free from foot and mouth, blue-tongue and other diseases. Last week more than 700 cattle from South Queensland farms were slaughtered after the discovery that bull semen had been smuggled into Australia. The animals were destroyed as a precaution against the introduction of blue-tongue, which is deadly to sheep. Toy bones imported in the past have been of a plastic or other composition, authorities said today.
