Post Officers’ Reunion

A record number of post offices had been opened in Canterbury this year, the Chief Postmaster (Mr J. w. Lincoln) told about 200 retired officers of the Post Office at their annual reunion yesterday afternoon. Mr Lincoln said nine new post offices had been opened, the biggest at Ashburton, it had also been decided that the new postal centre would be situated in Hereford street, with full postal, customs, drive-in and parking facilities.

The chief post office in Wellington now had a computer, which worked so well that the Post Office was considering installing them in the other main centres, said Mr Lincoln. About 920 new telephone subscribers had been connected during November, bringing the total number of new subscribers this year to 8140, Mr D. M. McFarlane, who deputised for the Regional Engineer, told the gathering. During the last 10 years, the number of toll calls had trebled, which sometimes resulted in appreciable delays. Because of this, the Post Office had arranged for a microwave link between Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, at a cost of more than £lm. Part of this link, which would provide 600 toll circuits when it was opened next year, would be used during the Christmas rush, said Mr McFarlane.
