Youth Instructor From Formosa
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON. December 2.
Because of the shortage of trained youth workers in New Zealand, particularly for physical education, the Wellington Boys’ Institute has obtained an instructor from Formosa.
The director. Mr D. H. Meiklejohn, said tonight that the Minister of Immigration (Mr Shand) had given provisional approval for the Formosan instructor to enter New Zealand. The instructor. Kok Yoong Choong, has a physical education degree from the University of Taiwan. A temporary permit for two years has been applied for.
The Immigration Department is awaiting his medical forms from Taiwan. Mr Choong will have to be “screened" by a department representative in Taiwan.
Mr Meiklejohn said he was "sitting with my fingers crossed” waiting for final approval for the instructor’s entry to New Zealand.
He had been trying to get an instructor in New Zealand for some time. Youth work in New Zealand was in the evenings and week-ends, periods which people did not want to work.
There was a shortage of qualified men and they took other jobs, mainly as school instructors.
The Formosan instructor was highly qualified in swimming and gymnastics, Mr Meiklejohn said.
