Japan Society Sukiyaki

Sukiyaki, the traditional Japanese meal cooked at the table and eaten with chopsticks, was the highlight of an end-of-year function held last evening by the Japan Society. More than 80 members and guests, dressed in Japanese costume, attended. A hostess was assigned to each of the 10 tables, and cooked and served the meal.

Sukiyaki, with a steak base, included vegetables and Japanese-style dried mushrooms, tofu (dried bean curd), harusame (noodles), coynaku and bamboo shoots. Saki, Japanese rice wine, and sembei, biscuits made of rice powder tied in seaweed, were served, and raw fruit was the second course.

Guests, including a representative of the Japanese Embassy in Wellington, were welcomed by the president (Mr G. J. Price) and Mrs Price. Several items were performed by members.
