Wairarapa Service To Be Continued
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 26. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) tonight said he agreed with a deputation from Wairarapa local and public bodies that an airline service to the Wairarapa was necessary.
A deputation headed by the Mayor of Masterton (Mr N. S. Tankersley) today asked the Prime Minister to ensure that the Wairarapa continued to receive an air service, preferably by South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand. Mr Holyoake said he understood arrangements were being made to ensure that the service to the Wairarapa was continued. He hoped the arrangements would prove satisfactory. At present, S.P.A.N.Z. runs two flights daily through Masterton.
Mr Tankersley said there was a possibility S.P.A.N.Z. would be unable to continue. “We went to see the Prime Minister to find out what the Government was proposing to do to ensure we would continue to have an air service and to impress on the Government how vital the air service was to the Wairarapa,” he said. “We suggested that Government financial support for S.P.A.N.Z. was a solution. The alternative is to find a means for S.P.A.N.Z. to operate more economically.”
