500 Leave N.Z., 500 Arrive Daily

The popularity of overseas travel with New Zealand residents showed no sign of lessening, said the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). In the six months ended September 30, 45,031 persons had left for overseas and 41,431 had returned. In the same period last year 38,364 had left and 34,334 had returned.

“External migration has reached the stage of nearly 500 persons arriving and 500 departing each day,” he said. A total of 87,507 persons arrived in New Zealand in the six months while 89,289 departed. In the same period of 1964, 75,458 arrived and 75.759 departed. Crews and through passengers on cruising liners had been excluded from the figures, he said. The number of tourists rose

3384 from 15,839 in the 1964 six months to 19,223. Nearly twice as many persons came on working holidays, 3696 compared with 1880. Cruise liners gave 19,827 persons a brief glance of New Zealand in the period, compared with 15,665 in the 1964 period. There / were 15,387 immigrants intending permanent residence in the six months, of whom 2177 were assisted by the Government. On the other hand there were 8486 permanent departures, persons intending to be away 12 months or more, so that the net gain was 6901. “Those coming for educational purposes increased in number from 107 to 261 and the number of arrivals for theatrical, entertaining and sporting, fell from 672 to 473. “More people are coming and going by air and fewer by sea,” Mr Maker said.
