Thomson Has Second Golf Win In Three Days

(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON. P. W. Thomson, of Australia, scored his second New Zealand golf victory within three days when he won the Metalcraft £lOOO 54-hole tournament at St Andrews, Hamilton, yesterday. On Sunday, the Australian had won the New Zealand Open for a record eighth time.

He finished with a total of 208, eight under par, three ahead of his fellow professionals, W. J.

Godfrey, R. R. Newdick (New Zealand), B. J. Coxon and A. A. Murray (Australia).

The top amateur was E. J McDougall (Tokoroa), on 212 Sharing this score were the Lochiel professional, F. X Buckler, and the visiting professionals, G. B. Wolstenhoime (England) and E. A. Ball (Australia). B. T. Boys (Hamilton) was the second amateur, on 217. McDougall Had Lead After yesterday morning’s second round McDougall, with a four-under-par 68, had led the field, on 137 by two strokes from Thomson and the young South African, C. Amm. They were followed by Buckler (141), Murray, Newdick arid Bovs (all 142) and Godfrey (143). In the afternoon, Thomson carded a three-under 69 to add to his two previous rounds of 71, and 68. He scored birdies at the first two holes but then dropped a shot on the short third. Turned In 33 Another birdie came at the 350-yard fifth, two more at the seventh and eighth and he turned in a brilliant fourunder 33.

Soon it was five under, as Thomson left the rest of the field well behind, scoring a birdie four at the eleventh. He was level with the card at the next three, but struck trouble at the fifteenth where he dropped a shot. Here Thomson was through the back of the green and his approach shot was too hard. Excellent putting on both the sixteenth and seventeenth saved him strokes, but on the tricky eighteenth he dropped another shot.

Amm had lost his great chance of winning the tournament at the eighteenth in the morning round. He sent his tee shot at the short hole out of bounds, dropped two strokes and finished with a 69. In the afternoon the gilt

had gone from his play. He appeared to be under pressure with the tension on, and his outward half of 37, although level with the card, was far worse than his two previous efforts for this nine. Although he birdied the sixth and seventh, he dropped shots at the fourth and ninth on the final nine, he was two over, dropping shots at the sixteenth and seventeenth, as well as the 441 yard par four tenth. A birdie on the eleventh saved him from a worse score than 74. “My play was just terrible,” Amm said. Murray sank a long putt at the seventeenth to join the other three in second place. Prior to this he had had the greatest difficulty in reaching the greens. To finish with a 69 said much for his ability in reaching the green with his seconds. Newdick Interrupted Godfrey reached the turn in the final round three under, with four birdies. Further birdies followed at the eleventh and thirteenth, and he finished with a 68. Newdick had the misfortune to be interrupted while attempting a putt on the seventeenth green in his final round. This certainly cost him a shot and as it turned out probably kept him from being second on his own. McDougall, the leader after both the first and second rounds, slipped right back when he took an eight at the par-five fourth in the final round. Until then he was all square and he finished the round without dropping another shot. His play, especially on the greens, was of the highest order.
