ROWING Union Retains Lead In Pennant Series

The Union Rowing Club’s lead of eight points, gained at the first Kerr’s Reach pennant regatta a fortnight ago, was not challenged at the second regatta on Saturday. By winning the novice singles, the junior pairs, and the novice pairs the club now has a total of 14 points and is 10 points ahead of its nearest rival, Canterbury, which has four points. Avon and Christ's College are tied for third with two points each. Saturday’s regatta was sponsored by the Canterbury Rowing Club and comprised 18 races—l2 heats and six finals. The organisation of the regatta was a vast improvement on the previous one. The most disappointing race of the day for Avon was the final of the junior pairs. As Avon and Union came round the final bend. Avon had a slight edge on Union, but a few yards from the finish. Avon hit the bank. The crew soon resumed but the pause was long enough for Union to take the lead and cross the line one length and a half in front of Avon. Union and Canterbury provided a close finish in the final of the senior pairs. Canterbury was just in front of Union down the home straight. Nea/ the line Union put on a spurt but left the challenge too late and could only manage to close the distance to about half a canvas.

In the maiden eight’s the Christ's College number two crew showed a clean stretch of water between Canterbury and had an easy win in the [first heat. The number one Christ's College crew was not
