Woodville Team Fit For Riccarton

“The Press” Special Service

PALMERSTON NORTH. Eight members of Woodville's Riccarton team drew attention to prosepects at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s spring meeting in final trials yesterday. Fleeting Moment looked in fine fettle for the New Zealand Cup when he ran a solid mile and a quarter. Baraboo looks a rival for Trial Offer after a smart six furlongs. All galloping was done on the course proper with the trestles about 30ft from the running rail. A, thick sole of grass cushioned the going, which was dead. Fleeting Moment was ridden in his final trial by his cup jockey, R. A, Jenkins. He moved off at the foot of the straight and hit his full stride approaching the mile. Working keenly to the back straight. Fleeting Moment was joined at the six by Far Cry and Sheriocks, the latter having the biggest weight. The trio ran ’ close together to the line, where , Fleeting Moment recorded Imin i 47Jsec for the mile, Im in 20 ! 2-ssec for the six and 41 3-ssec i lor the final three. Far Cry went well for a highI weight. His form* is poor, but his condition is impossible to fault. Although Sherlocks appears to have lightened a little since his Trentham success he was perhaps the most impressive in , yesterday’s sprint. Sir Torre is a fit light-weight for the cup. He proved it yesterday by working along steadily over six furlongs in Imin 22 3-9 sec. the last three in 39 4-ssec. Usually, Sir Torre is a bit lazy on the tracks, but his final trial could not be faulted. He should arrive at Riccarton in the peak of condition. Baraboo's sprint over six furlongs in imin ISsec was the highlight of the morning. He galloped strongly and ran his last three with no apparent effort to record 39 3-ssec. Near the home turn he was joined by Janeville, a two-year-old Syntax filly. They were together at the post where Bara-

boo could not have been more impressive. E. Rophia said he would have only three runners at Riccarton tomorrow, the two-year-old, Dukedom, had had his trip south cancelled by a minor injury. It appears that Rossmoyne may be left home after his maiden failure on the first day of the Napier Park meeting. Roman Consul will be the most interesting of Ropiha’s representatives. He is in great heart for his attempt on the New Zealand Derby, a race in which he should almost win. Yesterday, Roman Consul tackled a big task when asked to run a mile outside Baloo, one of the best track gallopers at the centre. Near the post Roman Consul was alongside his companion. recording Imin 50 3-ssec for the mile. Imin 23 3-Ssec for the last six and 41 3-ssec for the last three. Golden Bay,, a candidate for the Riccarton Handicap, worked evenly over five furlbngs in Imin 7 3-ssec. He was ridden by the diminutive apprentice, R. Grantham. Golden Bay's form is good enough to give him a winning chance.
