Mitchell Will Play In Aust.
Canterbury’s leading junior tennis player, the 17-year-old lefthanded Jim Mitchell, will leave for Australian tournaments on November 10.
Negotiations between the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association and the Canterbury association were made this week after Mitchell’s visit had been supported by the Australian coach. L. Atkins, at present in Christchurch.
Approval was given by the Canterbury association and the Beckenham club which will lose Mitchell, its top man, for several Saturdays. Mitchell will fly to Sydney and take part in the New South Wales. Victorian and South Australian championships. He will return to New Zealand on December 11 to take part in the Wellington championships It appears the New Zealand Association intends Mitchell and the Aucklander. Brian Fairlie, who is already in Australia, to be the nucleus of this season’s Linton Cup team and hopes they will be able to play together in Australia.
Both are eligible for Linton Cup play for two more seasons.
Mitchell is ranked second to Fairlie on the New Zealand under 17 list and fifth to Fairlie’s fourth on the national under 19 list. It will be Mitchell’s third tennis trip to Australia.
He took part in the New South Wales age and school championships in 1963. spon-
sored by the Canterbury association. and he was a member |of last season’s Linton Cup side. His air fares this time will be paid by the New Zealand association and the Canterbury association will contribute internal travel and out-of-pocket expenses in Australia, where he will be billeted.
