RACING Well-Bred Terrific Impresses In Trial
Terrific, a good type of Gigantic colt which M. E. Ritchie has brought south for the New Zealand Derby, made a good impression in a work-out over ground 40 feet out on the course proper at Riccarton yesterday.
It was not so much the time he ran but the way that he went which made his gallop look good. Terrific was partnered in his trial by Midnight Kiss, a New Zealand Cup candidate, and Count de Seine, which will be one of his rivals in Saturday’s classic.
Terrific was quickly in stride when the three broke away near the mile and a quarter and he had E. G. Low busy holding him back to allow Midnight Kiss to draw level as they ran to the mile. At that stage Count de Seine was trailing in a small gap. Count de Seine kept behind in the run down the back but the three ran as one past the half-mile. They finished the gallop abreast with Terrific still working keenly. The time for the distance was 2min 22 3.ssec on a soft track. They came the last mile in lmin 51 4.ssec and the last half in 53 I.ssec.
Midnight Kiss, a smallish but sturdy Ocean Spray II gelding, was ridden by his Matamata trainer, F. R. Beguely, and Count de Seine, a member of J. S. Shaw’s team, was ridden by K. Hobson, the stable apprentice. Terrific, an impressive winner against the hack milers at Te Rapa the last time he raced, should manage the Derby distance if he runs up to his breeding. He is out of Our Love, a half-sister to
the high-class stayers, Straight Draw and Ilumquh. Another good gallop over ground was recorded by Royal Bid, the New Zealand Cup top-weight. He ran the last mile of a mile and a quarter in lmin 50sec and came his last half in 53 I.ssec, a smart solo run. He was ridden by his cup rider, F. H. Skelton. Fast Half-Miles
Kalott, an Otaki-trained two-year-old. and Tumble, a Stewards’ Handicap light-weight, took the honours over less ground. Neither had much weight with which to contend with A. H. Eastwood up. Tumble’s 50 I.ssec for half a mile was the best of the morning. Kalott completed a similar task in 50 3.ssec. This Golden Abbey filly, which has run a third and fifth in her two starts to date, will be a Welcome Stakes prospect.
Pharasal (B. D. Collins) and Court (A. J. Stokes) ran the last four of five furlongs together in 52 2.ssec. These Tomkinson-trained three-year-olds will be rivals in the Spring Plate.
Standout (A. H. Eastwood) was shading the Derby colt Devastation (C. T., Wilson) after running the last seven furlongs of a mile in lmin 33 3.ssec, the final half-mile in 53sec. Standout looks in good order for the Riccarton Handicap. Sir Limond (R. P. Register) led We’ll Find Out (R. K. Moir) by a length and Approval (R. L. Browning) by two lengths and a half after running home from the half-mile in 53 4.ssec. Local Sprint Hope Shipmate (A. J. Stokes) and Hushaway (B. D. Collins) sped over the last four furlongs over five in 51 4.ssec. It was a good gallop for neither prefers the ground soft. Shipmate, which seems to have made a good recovery from a minor set-back recently, will probably be Riccarton’s strongest Stewards’ Handicap hope. Aconite (R. K. Moir) and Pango (A. J. Stokes) were abreast, two lengths in advance of Pretentious (K. Drummond) after dashing home from the half-mile in 51 2.ssec. Aconite, a Cassock gelding in D. J. Thistoll’s stable, will have his first race in the Welcome Stakes.
Bastille (N. T. Cowles) and Bellition (E. J. Didham) were abreast and going well half a length, ahead of Prince Callan (P. J. Daly) after running the last four of six furlongs in 51 2-ssec.
Waverley (N. T. Cowles) did well under a fair weight to run seven furlongs in lmin 35 2-ssec, his final half-mile in 53 3-ssec.
Dunsun (E. G. Low) shaped well for a hack to shade his open class stablemate Royal Estate (E. J. Didham) after running the last four of five furlongs in 52 2-ssec. Surgaway (C. T. Wilson) ran seven furlongs in lmin 33sec, her final half-mile in 52 3-ssec and the last three furlongs in 40sec. The Spring Plate top-weight could have done better. Gunga Din (P. Williams) ran his half-mile in 51 3-ssec. In a similar task Polar (E. Gye) and Resmart (E. J. Didham) took 51 2-ssec. Desert Terror (J. Kerkvliet) and El Beka (P. J. Daly) were together throughout their halfmile in 52 4-ssec. Desert Terror, a Spring Plate lightweight, won in maiden class at Motukarara last Saturday. Treated For Corns Sir Robert, which has been under treatment for corns, hit out freely but was not required to make fast time over nine furlongs. He took 2min 6 4-ssec for the distance and came home from the halfmile in 56sec. Marlow (P. J. Daly) ran the same distance in 2min 8 4-ssec and ran in from the half-mile in 55 l-ssec. Status Symbol (D. N. Hadfield) and General Gilbert (J. Kerkvliet) were abreast after running six furlongs in lmin 20sec, the final half-mile in 53 l-ssec. Neither is engaged on the first day of the New Zealand Cup meeting. Seminole (B. Edens) led Danny Kaye (A. J. Stokes) by a length after running the last seven furlongs of a mile in lmin 33 4-ssec, the final halfmile in 53 4-ssec. Danny Kaye, a Derby colt,
could have probably done better had he not worked with his stablemate in which he takes a keen interest. Seminole, which is being prepared for the New Zealand Oaks, will compete in the Spring Plate on New Zealand Cup Day.
