SULPHUR ORE

Rich Lode Found (N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, October 31. Two prospectors taking an evening stroll have discovered a rich lode of silver lead zinc sulphide ore within 100 yards of their camp at Puramahoi. near Takaka. Mr J. C. Braithwaite, the chief geologist for Lime and Marble, Ltd., says the commercial prospects of the deposit, based on indications of its size and the grade of the sulphide, are “quite reasonable.” The discover was described by a visiting Canadian geophysicist, Mr E. Burnside, as “amazing.”

“To think that a vein of this ore, at least 2ft thick, should be found casually within two miles of the main road staggers me,” he said. A sulphur industry may be established in Golden Bay if current investigations into the deposits prove favourable.

The men who made the discovery at Puramahoi were Mr Brian Muddiman, the chief prospector for Lime and Marble, Ltd., and Mr Terry Ball.

If the industry is established the sulphur will be used in the manufactaure of fertilisers for which about £2m in overseas exchange is annually at present.
