RACING £20,000 Asked For Champion Jumper
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND. The champion jumper, Smoke Ring, is under offer to England for £20,000. The price was set by the
owners, Messrs C. Conway and S. Jones, at the week-end after receiving an inquiry from the British bloodstock firm of Timbs-Mannion.
“We were asked to put two prices on Smoke Ring—one for an outright sale and another for a two-third share to a British owner,” said Conway yesterday, “but we were not interested in entering into any partnerships.” Smoke Ring’s owners refused a United States offer of £lO,OOO after the horse won his second Great Northern Hurdles in June. Since then Smoke Ring has won the Great Northern Steeplechase and three flat races worth more than £5OOO, boosting his earnings to more than £17,000.
Earlier this year Conway and his partner considered taking Smoke Ring to France. “A £25,000 hurdle race there looked tempting, but when we took into account the expense of getting there we decided against it,” said Conway. Smoke Ring is at present on spell. If he is not sold he will . resume training in December in preparation for another winter- campaign.
