U.S. Buying More Lamb

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 1. Promotion of New Zealand lamb in Canada and the United States this year had brought results well beyond expectations, Mr B. Ryan, a member of the New Zealand Meat Board and a director of the Meat Export Development Company, said today.

Mr Ryan and the board's director of trade promotion, Mr P. D. Hewland, returned from North America after

planning the board’s promotion programme for 1966. Mr Ryan said that the work being done to develop the North American market for lamb was more important than ever. New Zealand must have additional markets; but it must be understood that development was expensive, especially where there were such financial hurdles as tariffs, higher shipping freight rates and additional costs in preparation. Acceptance and use of New Zealand lamb in Canada and the United States was most encouraging.

Promotion programmes in Vancouver, Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo had developed a sustained demand for the product both within and beyond these areas at improved prices and continuity of supply would be essential. Nonetheless it should not be imagined that there was yet a market , yielding a satisfactory alternative, financially, to the current British market, Mr Ryan said. “The over-riding importance of the British market must be apparent to everyone,” he said.
