Fertiliser Sales Show Big Increase

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 1. Fertiliser sales over the first three months of the current year from July 1 showed a big increase over those of the same period last year, which were a record, the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys) told Parliament today.

“Sales have increased over the three months by 83,000 tons or 25 per cent, It is generally considered that the main cause of this spectacular increase is the transport subsidy.” Mr Taiboys had been asked by Mr D. J. Carter (Govt.,

Raglan) to comment on fertiliser production and sales since the transport subsidy came into effect.

Mr H. V. Donald (Govt., Wairarapa) aske ’ Mr Taiboys if there had been any indication that farming production had increased in direct relationship to the use of fertiliser.

If so, had the farming industry taken the necessary steps to continue the increase in production at or above the 4 per cent set by the target committee of the Agricultural Development Conference? “During the last three seasons, over which sales of fertiliser increased by nearly 5 per cent, there have been substantial increases in stock numbers and most farm products,” Mr Taiboys said.

“Insofar as attainment of production targets is concerned, I agree with the view expressed by the economic service of the Meat and Wool Boards that, ‘given the maintenance of the present climate of far i production, the coming years should see the realisation of the targets set by the Agricultural Development Conference in 1963,’ ” said Mr Taiboys.
