Intensified Effort By Residence Halls Appeal
An appeal to all connected with the campaign to intensify their efforts over the next few weeks was made by the president, Sir James Hay, at a meeting of the organising committee of the Combined Appeal for Church Halls of Residence at the University of Canterbury yesterday. Sir James Hay said the total was more than £40,000. The appeal is for £lOO,OOO to build three church halls of residence for students attending the new university at Ilam. The Anglican Church is building' Christchurch College to take 125 men, the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches will house 75 men and 75 women students in Rutherford Hall and the Roman Catholic Church will build Rochester
Hall to take an initial 100 students with extensions planned later.
The chairman of the regional committee for the appeal (Sir Joseph Ward) reported that meetings had been held in Timaru and Nelson to establish committees to assist the appeal. A function would be held in Greymouth this evening and later 'this week it was planned to form a committee in Wellington to interview the 500 graduates in that area. Preliminary steps had been taken to establish a committee in London.
The meeting agreed to send a special letter of thanks to the Canterbury branch of the Federation of University Women for its gift of £lOOO to the appeal. It was reported that members of the federation had also been of considerable assistance in establishing committees outside Christchurch. Arrangements were made to hold a meeting on November 15 of all persons working for the appeal.
