Auction Of V.C. Cancelled
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)
MELBOURNE, November 1. A cable was sent to London yesterday to stop the auction of the Victoria Cross awarded to a New Guinea war hero, Richard Kelliher. The cable was sent to Sotheby’s auction rooms by the secretary of
Kelliher’s battalion, Mr Bruce Ruxton. Kelliher’s widow, now Mrs Olive Rawkins, has changed her mind about auctioning the medal in London. Mr Ruxton said that he and the battalion’s treasurer, Mr Jack Spooner, had been able to dissuade Mrs Rawkins from selling the medal abroad. He said Mrs Rawkins still wanted
£lOOO for the medal set up in a trust fund for her three children —Kerry, aged 15. Mary-Ellen, aged 10, and Richard, aged 9. Mr Ruxton said the battalion would raise the £lOOO by a public appeal. He said that the battalion intended to present the medal to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
