Party At Mt. Cook (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, November 1. A three-man party of Japanese climbers from the Osaka Economic University, which left the Mount Cook National Park Board’s headquarters at the Hermitage last Friday morning, is still in the Malte Brun Hut, at an altitude of 5700 feet. The party, which is led by Mr K. Bubota, is expected to stay in the region for 10 days. It is the first to visit the Southern Alps this season. The board’s chief ranger (Mr M. L. Burke) said climbing conditions were not at all favourable. North-west conditions, with rain, and snow at higher levels, prevailed at the week-end. A second team of Japanese mountaineers, a four-man expedition from a private university in Tokyo, is expected to arrive in Christchurch early next month. The party will train at Arthur’s Pass, and later attempt to scale the 10,421 ft Mount Malte Brun and some peaks near it Mount Cook and peaks nearby will be attacked from December 27 to January 3. A third team will arrive towards Christmas.
Chimney Fire.—A chimney fire in the home of Mr N. McLenaghan, 112 Ruskin street at 3.32 p.m. yesterday caused no damage. Sydenham firemen answered the alarm.
