OCTOBER TOLL

Big Rise On Last Year (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. October road deaths were 51, in contrast to the 20 fatalities in October of last year and 23 in October of 1963. Deaths since the beginning of the year at midnight last night were 479, compared with 355 for the same period last year. The 479 who have been killed since January 1 were, with many hundreds who escaped with injuries in the same vehicles, victims of 419 accidents, 47 of them last month.

Many of the crashes have been single vehicles in collision with poles, bridge ends and banks, running off roadways and overturning. More than one-third—l 44— of the 419 fatal accidents in the 10 months were of this type.
