Princess Melenaite, of Tonga, and her daughter, Princess Fusipala Tukuaho, have arrived in Auckland. They are staying in the Tongan Royal residence at Epsom. Queen Salote will arrive in a few weeks.—(P.A.) Air Chief Marshal Sir John Grandy, Commander-in-Chief, Far East, and Lady Grandy, will arrive in Wellington today for a six-day official New Zealand visit during which he will meet the Prime Minister, service officers, heads of departments and civic authorities and will visit the R.N.Z.A.F. base at Ohakea and Waiouru Military Camp.—(P.A.). Mr E. W. Mahood, of Hamilton, will be officer in charge of the Auckland police district. His promotion from officer in charge at Hamilton, where he held the rank of chief superintendent, was announced yesterday by the Commissioner of Police (Mr C. L. Spencer). Mr Mahood will succeed Assistant Commissioner A. G. Quin, who retired yesterday as officer in charge at Auckland.— (P.A.)
Dr. L. L. Pownall, the ViceChancellor of the University of Canterbury, had accepted an invitation to join the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association council, the president of the association (Mr C. W. Mace) said yesterday.
