BRISBANE.i The Australian captain, R.l B. Simpson, broke his left! arm on Saturday and is likely to miss at.least three) of the five tests this season) against England. Simpson was batting for New South Wales against Queensland in the first Sheffield Shield match of the new competition. He was struck on the arm by the pace bowler, P. Allan's,
second delivery. The ball rose about chest high above the off stump and Simpson tried to play it defensively.
But it flew past his bat, hit his arm and snapped a bone just above the left wrist. G. Thomas made a bold bid for Simpson’s vacant test opening berth with a brilliant 182 for New South Wales. In almost even time he hit 33 fours and a six, and helped put New South Wales back in the match after a first innings collapse.
Scores: Queensland 307, New South Wales 108 (P. Allan 4/32, R. Duncan 4/42) and 237/2 (G. Thomas 182, B. C. Booth 54 not out).
