Exciting Play As Third Cricket Round Begins

Play when the third round of the senior cricket championship began on Saturday was most interesting this season. There were several highly spectacular innings, some dramatic collapses, and in the main match between Sydenham and St. Albans, a fierce struggle for first innings and bonus points.

West Christchurch-University, at one stage 182 for one wicket, lost wickets so swiftly that the side was dismissed for 219 and Lancaster Park was half out for 71 before A. Harrison started a recovery which B. Andrews completed spectacularly.

But the keenest fight was on Hagley No. 1, where, at close of play, St. Albans needed five runs in three balls to take first innings and bonus points.

Leading roles in the play were taken by W. A. Hadlee, who scored 128 not out for Old Boys against Old Collegians and helped take his team's total from 90 for seven to 266; G. A. Bartlett, who scythed through East Christ-church-Shirley with eight for 15. and made his tally 17 for 63 in his last three innings; B. Andrews, who hit eight 6’s in a riotous 75 runs in 45 minutes for Lancaster Park; G. T. Dowling, who re-

turned to form with an innings of 91; R. C. Motz and J. M. Mclntyre, both of whom added substantially to their impressive bowling records this season.

With seven wickets for 73, Motz made his season’s total 23. Mclntyre, with six for 41 took his bowling aggregate to 21. Two slow left-handers, M. G. Lester (Old Collegians) and D. I. A. Cameron (EastShirley) each took five wickets. C. *L. Broad (Riccarton) and B. C. Adams (WestUniversity) made half-centur-ies. Scores: — Lancaster Park 290: Riccarton 113 for six wickets. Sydenham 126; St. Albans 122 for nine wickets. West Christ-church-University 219: East Christchurch-Shirley 78 and 12 for no wickets. Old Boys 266; Old Collegians 66 for seven wickets.
