Showdown In Algiers
(N.Z.P A -Reuter—Copyright) ALGIERS, Oct. 31. Afro-Asian foreign ministers face a showdown in Algiers today over China’s proposal for an adjournment of their summit, scheduled for November 5.
There will be a crucial meeting today over Uganda's introduction of the summit's preparatory committee report on China's request for an adjournment. The main point from last night's preparatory meeting
was India's suggestion that Russia participate in the AfroAsian conference. This received the support of 25 Countries. China has said it will definitely not attend if Russia is represented. Last night’s session was attended by 45 countries, onlyhalf of them represented byministers.
The Philippines and Thailand were among countries
lobbying for converting the present foreign ministers’ meeting into a second Bandung Afro-Asian conference, which would adopt political resolutions and not merely draw up an agenda for the summit.
Countries not attending the conference and believed to be in favour of an adjournment are China, Pakistan. Cambodia. Guinea, Tanzania, North Korea, and North Vietnam.
