OFFENDERS TO PAY
Dept’s Claims Allowed (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 29. For the first time, the crimes compensation tribunal today sanctioned applications by the Department of Justice to enable the department to reimburse itself from offenders for compensation paid by the department under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act. Orders by the tribunal will allow the department to refund itself from three offenders, one of whom is in prison. Orders were made against Kenneth Russell Trevarthen, a bank worker, now serving a three-year sentence for assault with intent to rob (£29 9s lOd), Patrick Laurence Harpur, on probation for assault (£10), and Vai Arapai, convicted of assault (£l2 2s). In none of the applications will the offenders be asked to pay the whole amount of compensation paid to the victims.
