Old Building Burnt

The last of the eight old barracks on the Salvation Army’s property in Poulson street was burnt down by demolition contractors on Saturday. The site is thus now clear of buildings for new Salvation Army men’s social service centre.

The Christchurch Fire Brigade was not present at the controlled burning. “It is contrary to the policy of the board to stand by while any building, rubbish, or herbage is burnt.” said the Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond) yesterday. “Our job is to fight existing fires when they cause danger or damage.” It was reported in “The Press” that the fire brigade would be present. This information was not given by Mr Osmond.
