NEW CHURCH

St. Saviour's Parish

The foundation stone of a new church for St. Saviour’s parish, Sydenham, will be laid on Sunday by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren). He will be assisted by a former vicar of the parish, the Ven. S. E. Woods, who is now vicar of St. Mary’s, Merivale, and by the vicar of Sumner (the Ven. R. P. F. Plaistowe). The new church will be built at the intersection of Colombo and Roxburgh streets. The present churcth is in Buchan street, and Sunday will be its eighty-eighth anniversary.

The original St. Saviour’s was built during the episcopacy of the Rt. Rev. H. J. C. Harper. The first vicar was the Rev. H. B. Cochs. The first church, a wooden building, was near the local school and a group of railway workers’ houses. A vicarage was built next to the church in 1895, and a parish hall was built in 1903.

Latterly more light industry moved into the parish, and the vestry was urged to seek a new site where the church would be in an established residential area.

The present vicar of St. Saviour’s is the Rev. J. F. Ellis.
