MEMORIAL TO BYRD
Dedication At McMurdo
A memorial to Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd at McMurdo Station was dedicated on Monday by Rear-Admiral F. E. Ba'kutis. commander of the United States Navy’s Antarctic support force. It is a bronze bust of Admiral Byrd on a pedestal of polished Norwegian black marble. The bust, which was given hv the National Geographic Society, is the work of Felix de Weldon, who sculptured the famous Iwo Jima war memorial to the United States Marines in Washington. On the sides of the pedestal are inscribed Admiral Byrd's more significant achievements and the dates of his five Antarctic expeditions. The memorial was dedicated on the anniversary of Admiral Byrd's birthday in the presence of more than 450 United States Navy men, and American and New Zealand scientists. Admiral Bakutis described the ceremony as a testimonial to a man who, ranked ...nong the greatest | and bravest of Antarctic ex- j plorers. He said it was Admiral Byrd’s lastine inspiration which influenced many of the Antarctic traditions carried on today. 1
