FAVOURITES WIN COURSE DOUBLE

Hunting Horn and Summer Lad won a favourites’ on-course double for Riccarton stables at Rangiora yesterday. Holders of 615 5s tickets on this combination received £7 7s 6d for £l.

Hunting Horn completed the meeting with an unbeaten record when he won the honours easily in the W. Parsons Memorial High-weight. Mr J. H. Grigg’s solid Alpenhorn gelding was ridden confidently by B. T. Jones, who had him last but one early. Jones took him forward on the outside to lead around the home turn, and it was then only a question of What would fill the minor places. We Wood, always handy, took second place by half a head from Walhalla, the tailender when the field settled. Indian Chief was a tiring fourth.

EARNED HIS WIN Ridden with coolness and skill by A. Teller Summer Lad broke

through for his first win in the colours of Dr. M. G. Louisson ill the Springbank Hack Handicap.

Summer Lad was favourite after a second to Clipper on the first day of the meeting. Teller had the former North islander well placed close to the lead all the way. The Summertime gelding followed Danny Kaye and Eastburn into the straight, led into the final furlong, and won a little more easily than his margin of half a length might suggest. Danny Kaye was second to last early,. but was taken forward on the outstide to be disputing the lead half a mile out. He ran it out gamely to beat Count de Seine by half a length for second.

Gold Shower was a length and a half back fourth after being forced to give ground on the inside near the three furlongs. Coral Prince was a tiring fifth after leading early and trailing from the middle stage.
