MEXICO CITY. The Japanese Honda scored a sensational break-through to win the Mexico Grand Prix on Sunday.
Driven by Richie Ginther, the Honda got off to a flying start and maintained the lead throughout the gruelling 65 laps.
The race took a heavy toll and only four of the 17 starters finished.
Among the drop-outs was the world champion, Jim Clark who had engine trouble after only nine laps and, for the second year, had to walk back to the pits. Last year his forced retirement in the penultimate lap cost him the world championship. Hard on Ginther’s heels from the twentieth lap was Dan Gurney, last year's winner. in a Brabham Climax.
Third was Mike Spence in a Lotus Climax, who had battled in vain with Gurney for second place, but progressively lost ground to the American.
Jo Siffert, driving a Brabham Climax, finished fourth after taking over from Graham Hill, whose B.R.M. had maintained a consistent fourth place from the twelfth to the fifty-sixth lap when he was forced to retire.
In the thirty-third lap, Lorenzo Bandini and Pedro
Rodriguez came into the pits together in their Ferraris after colliding, with Rodriguez's car ablaze and badly buckled. Firemen were called out but were not required.
