Servicing Island Weather Stations
The annual servicing of Campbell Island and Raoul Island weather stations will begin at the end of this month. The Holmburn will leave for Campbell Island on October 29 and is due back in Wellington on November 7. Group Captain A. H. Marsh, nrincipal medical officer in the department, Mr P. H. Saunders, another departmental officer, and Mr J. S. Falconer, of the Meteorological Service, will make routine inspections of the station facilities on this trip. The only expedition member sailing in the Holmburn will be Mr D. A. Leigh (Wellington), ionosphere observer.
Other members of the 1965-66 expedition already on Campbell Island are: Messrs D R. Nightingale (Auckland), officer-in-charge; .1. P. Squibb (Christchurch), senior meteorological observer; D. H. Shone, and P. J. Shone both meteological observers from Christchurch; W. R. Fergusson (Christchurch) telecommunications technician, who is on his second tour: P. A. Hughes (Anglesey, Wales), electronic technician: G A. Guard (Fairlie), mechanic, second tour: C. G. Surrey (New Plymouth), chef, second tour. Members of the 1964-65 team who will return in the Holmburn are: Messrs C. M. Clark (Christchurch), officer-in-charge; K. C. Kibblewhite (Wellington), ionosphere observer: and N. McDonald (Wellington), electronic technician.
Others returning at a later date in United States Navy picket ships, will include Messrs D. C. Carron (Wellington), senior ionosphere observer; R. M. F. Craig (Ashburton) and D. Paul (Dunedin), both meteorological observers. In the Holmburn, when she
sails for Raoul Island, probably on November 8, will be Group Captain Marsh and Mr A. M. Pritchard, who will inspect the new high-pressure water system, Mr W. Hughes. Ministry of Works building superintendent, and Mr E. F. Licyd, D.5.1.R., Rotorua, a geologist who will investigate the recently active volcanicarea.
Mr F. W. Hodson, Department of Civil Aviation, and Mr P. G. R. Kemp, Meteorological Service, will also visit Raoul Island on this trip. New expedition members going to Raoul Island are: Messrs R. D. Feron (Ashburton), mechanic; A. T. Blake (Wellington), farm manager; M. D. Hanlon (Kaitaia), handyman; E. H. Jones (Kent, England), chef; B. T. Dowie (Dunedin) and I. R. Bailey jiChristchurch), meteorological observers.
The present officer in charge Mr C. Phillips (Auckland), Mr D. H. Thorp (Auckland), telecommunications technician, and Mr V. W. Sussmilch (Takapau), meteorological observer, will all be doing a second term.
On the return journey from Raoul Island the Holmburn will bring back members of the 1964-65 expedition. These are: Messrs F. D. Buitenkamp (Wellington),mechanic; W. R. Orchiston (Gisborne), farm manager; W. M. Crafar (Blenheim), handyman; B. T. Phipps (Christchurch) and W. G. Little (Auckland) meteorological observers.
Lost Tablets.—-A glass phial containing 10 green tablets which was lost in the Somerfield street area last Thursday has not been recovered. These tablets could be dangerous to children.
