Obituary MR W. CAWKELL

AUCKLAND, Oct. 25. Mr Walter Cawkell, 'an Auckland surgeon, has died after a long illness. Born at Auckland, Mr Cawkell attended Auckland Grammar School and Otago University, graduating in 1937. After hospital experience he went tn Britain just as war broke out and joined the New Zealand Medical Corps. He was a surgeon at the fifth New Zealand General Hospital, officer commanding a New Zealand field surgical unit and officer commanding the surgical division of the third New Zealand General Hospital. In Auckland he retained his military interest and became assistant director of army medical services in the Northern Military District Mr Cawkell was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, England, in 1942. After the war he carried out post-graduate work in London at St. Mark’s Hospital.

He returned tn Auckland in 1946 being appointed surgical registrar at Green Lane Hospital. He went into private practice and became senior surgeon at Green Lane. Mr Cawkell is survived by his wife and three children.
