RISKING A PENALTY
Valuate In Cup
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE.
V. P. Bernard, who is racing the Christchurch-owned horse, Valuate, on lease, is courting a weight penalty when he starts the Balloch five-year-old in the Moonee Valley Cup on Saturday. Valuate is one of the most strongly fancied runners for the Valley Cup in which he has been given 7-11, or 21b more than his handicap for the Melbourne Cup. Bernard is keen for Valuate to win at Moonee Valley and thus be in a position to be rehandicapped for the Melbourne Cup. “I am not worried about any penalty I might get for the big one,” he said.
It is understood Bernard is worried about his horse being balloted out of the field when final acceptances are taken on Thursday week. The balloting clause of the Melbourne Cup states that “surplus horses” will be eliminated in order of the greatest weight below weight-for-age. In the Melbourne Cun Valuate’s 7-9 represents 241 b below the standard. He will be ridden on Saturday bv H. White, his rider at Caulfield on Saturday. During the running of Saturday’s Caulfield Cup, Valuate struck early trouble, but in the run home covered more ground than any other horse in the race.
