Torere Shows Up In Awapuni Trial

“The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH

Torere, which has drawn well In Saturdays Rimutaka Hack Handicap at Trentham, ran boldly in training at Awapuni yesterday. His sound effort over five furlongs with Kenrick was the highlight of a quiet morning. Most of the horses which raced on the first day were restricted to easy tasks. My Desire and Goldtone, two fresh runners on Saturday also attracted attention in their work. On the course proper where the going was perfect, Torere was do-tog well along- i Kenrick at the finish of five furlongs in Imin 6sec, the last three in 39 3-ssec.

Torere never does more than he has to in training, but he galloped keenly today. He ran third at Waverley when not suited by the easy ground and he is an improving colt which could be right in the flring line Kenrick looks to be thriving. He will have his first start for the season at Bulls towards the end of the month. Going Easily Goldtone was going easily alongside High Filou, which also went well, at the end of six furlongs in Imin 21 4-ssec, the last three in 41 l-ssec. Goldtone was impressive. He has not looked back since a promising third at Stratford to a sprint race. He will be well suited by a mile in the Burnham Water Handicap. High Filou is very promising. She finished third at Waverley last week, but takes on tough opposition in the Desert Gold Stakes. She may go to Riccarton for the New Zealand Cup meeting. The improving My Desire covered five furlongs in Imin 5 3-5 sec, the last three in 38 4-ssec. She was just beaten at Masterton, but a wide draw is against her in Saturday’s Rimutaka Hack Handicap. Bagush jumped two hurdles well and so did Karnina. She later ran five furlongs' in Imin 5 2-ssec, the last three in 40-sec. Kamina will race in the hurdles on Saturday and Bagush on Monday. The ground was too firm for him in the Wellington Handicap. A visitor to the track was Sparkling Maid. She was brought over from Feilding. but was only restricted to strong pace work on the plough. Her owner-trainer, Mr J. Cuming, considered that she needed her race in the Wellington Handicap. She hit out well In her work yesterday, but blew after. Looked Bright

Laramie, Tyrol, and Alaska all came through their first day races in good style. Laramie, in narticular, looked bright. He had no luck in the running when he contested the Wellington Handicap. Warm Up, which ran a fair race to the Wellington Guineas, will be E. Temperton’s sole representative at Riccarton. The New Zealand Derby will be his main mission. The best may not seen of Warm Up until he races over more ground. Prince d’Amour, the brilliant winner of the Wellesley Stakes, is likely to start again to the Karitane Handicap on Saturday. E. Temperton accepted with him on the chance that the field would be weak.

The opposition looks far from strong and Prince d’Amour is almost certain to take his place in the field.

Later, he will go to Elilersilie for the Welcome Stakes, in which he will be ridden by G. F. Hughes. His rider on Saturday is J. R. Dowling.
