WELLINGTON, October 19. Social Security benefits were kept under constant review by the Government, as he had said previously, and no consideration was being given to the payment of a Christmas bonus, the Minister of Social Security (Mr Kinsella) told Parliament today. Mr G. A. Spooner (Opp.. Wanganui) had asked the Minister if he would relent and authorise a Christmas bonus to all beneficiaries “tn compensate them for the continuing increase in the cost of living, which has been aggravated by a sharp rise of 1J per cent in the ail-f ood index during September.” Mr A. J. Faulkner (Opp., Roskill) asked if the Government was satisfied that the age benefit was sufficient for pensioners’ needs. The Minister said the Government was never satisfied with the level of the age benefit. But the age benefit index was at present at the highest level for eight years.
