£100 Deposit For Marooned Man
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Oct. 19.
A Blenheim man who is sailing a trimaran across the Pacific to New Zealand is thought to have deposited £lOO with the New Zealand High Commissioner in Apia to meet the cost of having a Londoner he landed on Suwarrow Island, in the Cook Group, taken off.
The money, deposited by John Glennie, will be used to pay for diverting an island trading vessel to Suwarrow. The Londoner is Michael Swift, aged 26, a former art student who hitch-hiked to Suwarrow aboard the Trimaran.
He took with him piles of provisions and 40,000 cigarette lighter refuels—enought to last him 10 years. Mr Swift was reported as saying he wanted to live on the atoll to “get away from people.” But the Cook Islands Government said Swift was an illegal immigrant, because he had no permission to land on the island. Rarotonga is the only point of entry to the Cooks. The Cook Islands Government also contemplated laying charges against Mr Glennie for landing Swift on the waterless island.
Recent reports also said Mr Glennie might have had to pay
up to £lOOO to send a New Zealand warship to the island. It is not known when Mr Swift will be removed.
