Kandy Starts To Justify Price

“The Press'* Special Service AUCKLAND. An Auckland owner, Mr L. R. Allen, gained an immediate return from a 6100-guinea purchase he made a few days beforehand when Kandy took the Spring Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday.

The prize for first was £1625 and Kandy won it by a long head from Damian's Pride.

Kandy was previously owned by Sir Stanley Goosman. He has now had three starts this season for a first and two seconds.

Kandy and Damian’s Pride put on a great finish. Damian’s Pride had to go very hard in the first two furlongs before he got the pacemaking and Kandy mastered him only in the last 100 yards. It would have been a welldeserved success if Damian’s Pride had won. Kandy's victory was nevertheless thoroughly meritorious. It reflected the greatest credit as well on his trainer, G. W. Smith, of Takanini, who managed the horse for Sir Stanley Goosman and has retained him for Mr Allen.

Kandy was big and heavy in his two-year-old days and he has required careful handling.

Kandy took high rating among the three-year-olds last season with wins in the President's Handicap, a mile and a quarter, and the Racing Club Handicap, a mile and a half, at Auckland meetings. His stake earnings now stand at £5990. The weather was fine and the going fast. An attendance of 14,259 against 16,096 bet £165.972 ss. The turn-over last year was £176,831. Results:
