Trentham Inquiries

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON.

About half a furlong before leaving the chute in the Shorts Handicap at Trentham on Saturday Grand Win (L. K. Tinsley) lost her position when racing inside Croydon's Gold <B. L. Cullen).

The field was tightly packed and it could not be shown that any particular rider was at fault. No action was taken by the judicial committee. Shipmate (A. J. Stokes) finished near the rear In the same race. He had won hie previous start a few weeks earlier, but Stokes said that after that race Shipmate had injured a back muscle and had missed a good deal of work. Ichtar (J. T. Anderson), which was in the middle of the field and under a hard ride near the three furlongs in the Wainui Handicap, failed to run on. Anderson said that Ichtar jumped out on the wrong foot and remained unbalanced for most of the race. Royal Bld (F. H. Skelton), as usual, raced at the rear In the early and middle stages of the Wellngton Handicap. He made ground on the turn and was close to the leaders in the early part of the run home...but though he was ridddtT out he failed to cun on. Had to be Checked Laramie <C. A. Bowry) had to be checked about a furlong and a half from the finish of the Wellington Handicap. He had insufficient room to improve in side Fleeting Moment <R. W Taylor). Red Sash, which had won her onlv two starts, was slow away in the Wellesley Stakes. Her rider, B. P. Kennedy, said she was unsettled in her stall and persisted in moving toward the rear gate. She had not worked as freely as usual since she had been at Trentham and he considered that the hard tracks might have adversely affected her.

On the junction to the course proper, two and a half furlongs from the finish. Miss Mod (B. N. Mahoney), which was racing

near the rear, struck difficulty when she had no room to im prove. The film confirmed that there had been no interference

Royal Ransom (C. M. McGovern) was at the rear for most of the Glen Hurdles and even under a hard ride he was unable to make up ground. McGovern said the norse appeared to have been affected by the hard track and a veterinary examination showed that Royal Ransom was stepping short because of an abrasion on his off-hind fetlock. Nearly Fell On the turn in the Heretaunga Handicap Mairin (J. T. Anderson) nearly fell and Anderson lost his stirrups. Mairin was unbalanced for most ol :he next furlong. It was found that there had been no inter ference. but that Mairin had got on to the heels of Misjudge. Leaving the straight about two furlongs after the start of the same event, Foxoman (R. A. Jenkins), which waa fairly well back, had to be eased. As a result Hatari (L. J Gestro), which had missed the jump and was throwing his head about while being restrained, had to change ground sharply. In doing so he carried Legatus over extra ground. No rider was at fault.

About two and a half furlongs after the start of the October Handicap Pharasal (A. J Stokes) had to be eased. Half a furlong later Pharasal and Spectallte (A. E. Skinner) were sharply checked and lost their position. It was found that the incident was due to Natter (R. J. Skelton) racing erratically after coming in contact with the side of her stall at the start.

The assistant stipendiary steward told the committee that Skelton was doing his best to control Natter and no further action was taken.

Caprino (J. A. Messent) began to drift about five furlongs from the finish of the October Handicap and after tailing off he was pulled up near the straight entrance, A veterinary examination showed that he had bled.
