10 DIE IN WEEK-END MOTOR ACCIDENTS

Ten persons died in accidents involving motor vehicles throughout the country at the week-end.

One was a man who became engaged only half an hour before his death, and another was a 15-year-old schoolgirl.

They were two of four fatalities on Otago roads, the Press Association reports.

Two other road deaths were reported on Friday’. One was a young boy who was struck by a car near Hastings and the other was an 84-year-old man who died at Lower Hutt of injuries suffered on September 29.

One of the 10 deaths at the week-end was reported from Auckland, one from Hastings, two from W’anganui, two from Palmerston North, one from Oamaru and three from Dunedin.

On Saturday a 19-year-old Otara man died and six persons were admitted to Auckland hospitals when a van overturned after hitting a pole near Manurewa. A Palmerston North man died at the gate of his farm property near Awahuri when his car rolled forward and crushed him against the gatepost.

A 47-year-old Palmerston North man was believed to have collapsed and died at the wheel of his car. A man was killed and his two passengers, both Canadian hitch-hikers, were admitted t > hospital after a car hit a pole at Herbert, south of Oamaru.

Early on Sunday a 16-year-old Hastings youth died shortly after his car overturned in a city street. In another accident in which a car hit a power pole —about two miles south of Taihape yesterday afternoon —a passenger died. An Australian was killed and six other persons, including two children, were seriously injured when their car crashed over a small bank a mile north of Raetihi at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. Police are withholding their names until relatives in Australia have been informed. Hit Pole

A man was killed at Winiata, two miles south of Taihape, at 2.30 a.m. yesterday when the car in which he was a passenger overturned and hit a power pole.

He was Raymond Victor Townsend, aged 25, a garage attendant and shearer, of Tahu street, Mangaweka. He was married, with a young child.

The driver, Bevan John Lye, of Lower Hutt, was admitted to the Taihape Hospital suffering concussion. His condition was described as satisfactory

All the injured were in fairly satisfactory condition today, except Carol Edwards, aged 17, a freezing works employee, of 80 Gloucester road, Manurewa, who was seriously ill at Middlemore Hospital with head injuries.

The others at Middlemore are John Wharewaka, aged 20, a welder, single, of 221 Marua road, Ellerslie (fractured leg, concussion), and Gladys Roberts, aged 16, of 16 Ormond’s road, Manurewa (broken pelvis and ribs). Admitted to Auckland Hospital were: John Mauahari, aged 44, a car painter, of 192 Baird’s road, Otara (concussion), his son, Alec Mauahari, aged 16, a workman (concussion), and Jimmy Walters, aged 21, a workman, of 13 Coppins road, Otahuhu (concussion). Rescuers used cutting gear to free some of the injured. Police investigating the accident found a safe in front of the wreckage. Car Overturned

A 16-year-old youth died in Hastings Hospital yesterday after the car he was driving had overturned. He was Colin Noel Patrick Yorke, of Cunningham crescent, Hastings.

The accident happened in Willow Park road, Hastings, about 1.30 a.m. He died about mid-day. A young boy who was a passenger in the car was not injured. Thrown 46ft

A man whose engagement had been announced half an hour earlier died in hospital after an accident in North road, Dunedin, at 6.50 p.m. on Saturday. He was Peter Morris John Taylor, aged 22, of Wellington.

He was the pillion passenger on a motor-cycle which collided with a car near the Ross Home for Old People. He was thrown 46ft from the machine, and died of his injuries 15 minutes after he was admitted to hospital. The rider, Alan John Middleditch, aged 17, of Cockerill street, was admitted to hospital with a broken arm and hip. His condition tonight was described as satisfactory. The car driver was not hurt. Driver Killed The driver was killed when a car hit a telegraph pole on the main highway at Herbert, south of Oamaru, at 8.45 a.m. on Saturday. He was Ronald Patrick Collett, of Christchurch.

His mother, Mrs J. Collett, lives at 41 McCullough avenue, Mount Roskill, Auckland. Two passengers, both Canadian hitchhikers, were admitted to the Oamaru Hospital, one with a broken leg and the other with a scalp wound. They were David Albert Hough, aged 19, and James Gerald Nicol, aged 37. They were both in satisfactory condition. The car was wrecked. Telephone communications south of Oamaru were disrupted until 11.30 a.m. on Saturday. Crushed By Car A Palmerston North man was crushed to death on his farm property in Oroua road, near Awahuri, on Saturday morning.

He was R. V. Hunt, of 167 Albert street, married, with three children.

He had stopped his car to open a gate. It is thought the car rolled forward as he was re-entering it, and hit a post,

crushing him between the door and the chassis. A grazed front section was the only evidence that the car showed of the accident. Collapsed The driver of a car which mounted the footpath and stopped on the front lawn of a house in Tremaine avenue, Palmerston North, early on Saturday, was found to be dead on arrival at the Palmerston North Hospital. Kenneth Victor James, aged 47, of Palmerston North. It is believed he collapsed at the wheel.

Ran On Road A six-year-old boy was killed when he was struck by a car on the main highway near Te Aute College about 4 p.m. on Friday. He was Andrew Renata Wharewhiti, adopted son of Mr and Mrs Dick Renata, of Pukehou.

The boy was walking home from school with a party of children when he ran across the road and was struck by a car.

The driver was Emanuel Jensen, a retired farmer, of Westshore.

Died Of Injuries A man who was knocked down by a car in Lower Hutt on September 29 died in the Hutt Hospital late on Friday night. He was Phillip Roberts, aged 84, of Wilford street, Lower Hutt. Knocked Down

A man was knocked down and suffered head injuries while directing traffic past the scene of another accident on the Papatoetoe-Howick highway at East Tamaki, about 1 a.m. today. He is Stephen Taylor, aged 23, of 49 Greenlane road, Remuera. He was admitted to Middlemore Hospital, where his condition tonight was reported to be fairly satisfactory. No-one was injured in the first accident.
