SUBURBAN GAMES Beckenham And Burnside Leading After First Round
The first-round games in the Suburban Cricket Association's competitions ended on Saturday. The finish of the match between Sumner and Merivale promised to be tense, for Sumner needed eight runs to win with time for one more over and the last two Sumner batsmen at the crease. But heavy rain stopped play. Sumner, like Merivale lost five wickets cheaply, but a good stand of 124 by T. Smitheram and W. Boyce turned the game in Sumner’s favour. Beckenham, after playing itself into a sound-position on the first day, duly gained a five-point win. The later Waltham batsmen made the Beckenham bowlers earn their wickets, K. Townsend being the most successful. Papanui failed to overtake the Burnside total of 173. K. Smith batted well, but only J. Niven gave any real support.
