Oliver Sets Empire, N.Z. Weight-Lifting Record

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND. Auckland comfortably retained the teams’ trophy in the New Zealand weight-lifting championships on Saturday. Only one senior national record was bettered, by D. C. Oliver, in the clean and jerk.

Oliver had been suffering from influenza, and it had a definite effect on his performance.

He began poorly in the press, managing only 3301 b. In the snatch he showed some improvement, succeeding with 3001 b and gang close to 3201 b. His warm-ups for the final lift were none too impressive, however, and he began low with 3901 b. He moved on to 4101 b and elected 4351 b for his last attempt. He cleaned it well enough, it seemed, and jerked it solidly, only to have it ruled out for brushing his knee with his elbow. He called for the same weight again as an extra attempt, and crashed it up magnificently, for a national and Empire record.

L. R. Mills, the Olympic field events athlete, finished second. Mills totalled only 8801 b, but he looked capable of at least 1001 b more. M. Crow, the veteran ban-tam-weight, made a successful come-back to win the lightest class, while P. Ridgely similarly experienced little trouble to take the light-weight title. By far the tensest class was the mid heavy-weight W. F. Nabney was leading C. Wallwork by 151 b going into the jerk, and as Nabney was the lighter man, Wallwork had to lift 201 b more than his rival to win.

Nabney surprised everyone, however, with an easy 3051 b. This left Wallwork with the tremendous task of hoisting 3251 b. Twice he cleaned the bar powerfully, but both

times failed to lock his arms in the jerk. In the following results abbreviaitons used are:—(A.). Auckland; (C.), Canterbury: (H. 8.
