DEBATING TROPHY

Canterbury Wins

A Canterbury team beat Wellington to win the Norwood Tronhy for interprovineial debating on Saturday. It was the first South Island win in seven years of competition.

Only two teams were entered as Auckland, last year’s winner, was unable to send a team this year. The subject was: “That the United Nations has failed.” Canterbury took the negative. The contest was opened by the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) About 120 attended.

The trophy was presented by Sir Charles Norwood, a former Mayor of Wellington, for competition among teams from each province. The chairman of the judging panel (Mr H. P. Smith) presented the trophy. He said the standard of the debate had been very high. The reply of the leader of the Wellington team was one of the best he had ever heard.

The teams were:—Wellington: A. Ashenden (leader), D Harden, K. J. Bell. Canterbury: V. E. McKay (leader), A. B. Harman, J. R. Milligan.
