DEVASTATION IS STRONG FANCY

Wellington Guineas

Candidate Today

Devastation will probably start a firm favourite for the Wellington Guineas at Trentham today. Mr E. H. Debreceny’s Knight’s Romance colt has certainly earned that distinction.

' - Devastation, which is prepared at Otaki 1 by the former Riccarton trainer, K. J. Thomson, already has one classic win on his record. That was the f Hawke’s Bay Guineas which he won the last time he raced.

But Devastation had already entered calculations for the rich Wellington classic before his victory at Hastings. At his previous start he had handily beaten an open sprint field on the same course and the start before that he ran Carlsberg dose in the Wanganui Guineas, run in race-re-cord time.

The prospect of a Devastation victory today was also made easier when Urapukapuka, the Avondale and Great Northern Guineas winner, dropped out of the field during the week. Farmer’s Boy, from Takanini, and the Trenthamtrained Kintyre, which both took high two-year-old ranking, could make it an allNorth Island finish. Farmer’s Boy shaped like an early improver when he made ground for fifth in last Saturday's Great Northern Guineas.

Kintyre also showed that he was close to peak form the last time he raced. That was in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas in which he was the best behind Devastation.

Knight’s Command, which is; prepared at Otaki by B. A. V. Preston, who saddled His Grace to win the Wellington classic 12 months ago, and Sharab, a Te Rapa-trained fiHy, are other North Island youngsters with last start wins on their records. Captain’s Command, from Wingatui, Quick Flight, from Ashburton, and Riccarton’s Pee Wee will be the main South Island hopes. Royal Bid and Shipmate, which are both Riccartontrained, are "The Press” picks for the T.A.B. double. This double on the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting will operate on the Wellington Handicap, which caters for stayers, and the Shorts Handicap, the main sprint cm the programme.

A double for course patrons only will be run on the Wainui Handicap, for open class milers, and the Heretaunga Handicap, a race for hack stayers. Sobig and Mairin will probably be a popuiar combination.

The forecast for the Wellington district is for continued fine weather. The track is in excellent order. Fields, with form and riders, are reviewed below: — II.M am.—
