BRILLIANT IN GALLOP
Devastation At Otaki
“The Press” Special Service OTAKI,
Devastation ran what looked like a race-winning trial for the Wellington Guineas at Otaki yesterday. The Wainui Handicap candidates, Acapulco and Cantus, were also impressive, as was the hack, Marconi.
Devastation was brilliant when he beat Misjudge, a good track worker, over six furlongs in Imin 14 2-ssec, the five in Imin 1 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 49 2-ssec and the final three furlongs in 37 l-ssec.
Devastation looks to have the Wellington Guineas in safe keeping and it will be a major surprise if he is beaten. Misjudge was also impressive. He was only narrowly beaten by Devastation, and against the hack stayers in the Heretaunga Handicap his prospects look good.
Cantus and Acapulco showed their readiness for the Wainui Handicap with a sound trial over five furlongs in Imin Isec, the final-half-mile in 48jsec and the last three furlongs in 36sec. Acapulco, which looked to be stopping at the furlong, came again to be on terms with his companion at the finish.
Cantus has drawn wide and this is likely to count against him in the big field. Acapulco is handily placed at the barrier and after a good second in a sprint last start, he looks ready for the event Specialite covered the last three furlongs of her work, which started at the mile and a quarter, in 36 2-ssec. She appeared to be galloping well within herself at the finish. She is in the October Hack Handicap and she seems to have a good chance.
